Topic: Advanced Analytics – The next frontier for innovation and STEM jobs

The amount of information available via the Internet and social media is exploding and this trend is expected to continue. According to IBM, structured data constitutes only 20% of the overall data produced. Remaining 80% of the data is unstructured or semi structured. According to a report published by McKinsey Global Institute, there will be a shortage of talent necessary for organizations to take advantage of this data. McKinsey Global Institute predicts that by 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 workers and 1.5 million managers and analysts that need analytics expertise. This presentation will cover 1. Why is advanced analytics the hottest STEM topic? 2. What is the current status of advanced analytics? 3. What are the future perspectives of advanced analytics?

Biography: Kishore Erukulapati works as a senior Information Technology (IT) Consultant in the IT division of a major health insurance company in Honolulu, HI. He is an IT professional with 16 years of experience. He gained global and diverse experience by working in the USA, the UK, Germany and India.

Kishore has a Bachelor of Technology degree in computer science and engineering and a Master of Science degree in quality assurance. He is working towards a PhD in Technology Management degree.

Kishore holds various certifications through numerous professional bodies, all of which underscore his desire to be well connected to technical aspects of his diverse work in quality, professionally. He recently received the “Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence” certification from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and “Certified Senior Technology Manger” certification from the Association of Technology, Manufacturing, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). He is a senior professional member of ASQ and is a professional member of IEEE and ATMAE. He is serving as an acting secretary of IEEE Hawaii chapter.

This technical seminar hosted by the Computer Society presents two exciting topics at an introductory level, but with sufficient detail to be of benefit to professionals   Additionally, there will be a brief synopsis of the Castle Complex Redesign, as well as an overview of upcoming STEM Club activities and competitions.  Light refreshments will be provided.  It is free and open to the Public.

December Chapter Meeting

We are "tentatively" aiming for the second week in Dec. to present "Securing your Computer" at Castle High.  We are co-hosting with the Castle STEM club and AARP Hawaii.  We should have confirmation and details later in the week.

Our Chapter Election

We need to have an election for the Computer Society Chapter of the Hawaii Section.  The term will be two years for each office, viz., Jan. 1, 2013 – Dec 31, 2014. We plan to use vtools so that we have experience using it. Using the vtools election tool there is no longer a requirement for a teller committee and it is a secret ballot.  The chair can only vote in election if it is a secret ballot. We need at least one candidate we can announce.  Anyone will to serve should contact John Camery, john.camery@ieee.org. We can allow write in candidates. We have to wait two weeks after we announce the slate of candidates, to hold the election.  Allowing three weeks for the voting period should be an ample period of time. After the voting begins, we are only allowed to send out three emails about voting, and they must be sent at least 3 days apart. Three weeks will allow sending out one each week encouraging voting.  If any member would like to see changes in the election procedures, they can contact the chair, John Camery, john.camery@ieee.org or place a comment on HAWAII-IEEE.blogspot.com.  Section EXCOM will inform the candidates of the results, inform the section of the results and inform IEEE Headquarters of the results. This will be done as soon as practical after the voting period ends. There is no longer a requirement to send out a postcard announcing an IEEE election. 

Requirements of Chapter Office

1. Meet term limits, i.e.,  Consecutive period of service in any one office shall normally not exceed four years and the maximum time limit one individual can serve in one position in any single organizational unit is no more than six years in total.

Learn how to program an LED light strip! This particular LED strip is individually addressable and can make 4 million different colors. If you haven’t seen it in person, it is really impressive! The talk will discuss how to do different cool effects on the LED strip and incorporate data from sensors. We will go over some basic Arduino programming as well to help you get on running quickly. This is the LED strip that we will be using. You do not need to buy one, we will have several there to play with although you may need to share them. August 14 Technical Meeting at the Jelly Box

Here's how Matthew of HiCapacity describes it:

"HI Capacity will be going over using an Arduino with a digitally addressable RGB LED strip. The Arduino IDE runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. We will begin with a short Arduino discovery session before we move on to the LED strip. Each strip is 1m long and has 32 LEDs that can display upto 2 million colors per LED. We will be going over how to connect an Arduino to the strip in 1m and 5m lengths. We'll have all the necessary materials and equipment on hand, but everyone is welcome to bring a laptop. Using the strip will require a bit of math but we'll simplify it so that you can get it up and running quickly."

A New Website Competition

IEEE Hawaii Section Online - Our new website competition jointly sponsored by the Hawaii Section and the Hawaii Section Computer Society Chapter.

This competition is open to all Hawaii Section Student Members (as
individuals or in teams). The goal is to create a modern, useful,
secure site to be the online presence for the Hawaii Section.
Templates that comply with the IEEE National guidelines are
available (for Wordpress). Other frameworks are acceptable (such as
Drupal or xAMP+HTML). The judging will be held in November, so
student members should form teams and begin work early in the Fall.

The Hawaii Chapter of IEEE Computer Society is calling for nominations so we can have an election of new officers by the end of the year.  Get involved on the local or national level and make IEEE more relevant to your needs and the needs of your colleagues.

On April 25, 2012, we had an excellent dinner meeting with Mr. Walz, President of the Computer Society at Willoughby’s Restaurant in the Ohana Airport Hotel.  Here is his latest message to our members:
